Bob was a bus driver in Sheffield. He loved his job and enjoyed meeting people while driving his bus every day.
One morning he had been driving as usual and was happy because the traffic was not too busy. He was looking forward to taking the afternoon off and watching his daughter in the school play, Cinderella. His daughter’s name was Elisa and she had been practising for the play for eight weeks.
When he drove back to the garage, his boss, whose name was Dave, said to him, “Bob, we have a problem. A bus has broken down and it was due to pick up a group of children in Leeds after a trip to the zoo. They are waiting in the rain and cannot get home. Can you pick them up from Leeds?”
“Oh dear!”, Bob replied. “I was planning to watch my daughter in the school play this afternoon. I don’t think I will have time to get to Leeds and back to Sheffield”. His boss said “I had forgotten that you were doing that. Never mind, I’ll try to work out another way of getting the kids home”
Bob was a little sad. He wanted to see Elisa in the play but did not want the children to be left at the zoo, especially as it was raining. He thought about it for a while and then had a good idea. He knew that the school play was on for two days so he phoned the school and asked if he could swap his ticket for the second day. The teacher said, “Of course. No problem”.
Bob’s boss was happy because he did not have another driver to ask. So, Bob drove to Leeds and picked up the children who were glad to get out of the rain and back to Sheffield. Then, the next day he went to the school to watch Elisa in the play. She was very good and was glad to see her dad sitting in the front row looking very proud of her.
