Simon woke up earlier than usual and rushed to look out of the window. He was excited to see snow at last. He had been waiting all winter for snow. This was the first time he had seen any this year. He ran into his sister’s bedroom and shouted “Wake up Amy. It’s snowing!”. She jumped out of bed and joined him at the window looking out at their garden. The lawn was now covered in deep snow.
They talked about all the things they could do. Build a snowman. Have a snowball fight. Maybe even take the toboggan out to the slope in the local park. They chatted with excitement as they rushed downstairs to the kitchen where their Dad was sitting at the breakfast table with a cup of tea.
“Have you seen the snow Dad? Isn’t it fantastic!”
He said, “Well I’m not so happy because I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get to work”. The kids were too busy to worry about their Dad for a moment and sat down to breakfast. What were they going to do first?10
Their Mum came into the room and switched the radio on. “Calm down you two. We don’t know if your school is closed yet.”
They were reading out the names of the schools that were closed because of the snow. Simon and Amy waited to hear if their school was on the list. They waited and waited until they heard the name of their school. They laughed and ran off to plan their day playing in the snow. Their Dad thought he would join them and not risk the long drive to work.
